s a pet parent to a new cat, you may be wondering how to get rid of fleas on kittens. In this article, our vet experts weigh in.
The best way to remove fleas from kittens, as long as there are no open wounds and kittens are otherwise stable (not hypothermic, hypoglycemic or dehydrated), is to bathe them (see Resources below).
Flea shampoos are intended for kittens over 12 weeks, so avoid them if your kitten is younger. Soapy water will prevent fleas from jumping out of the bath and your kittens fur, so if you want to use it, pick one that isnt medicated and is gentle and tear-free, like baby shampoo or Dawn.

In most cases, it is not advised to use a chemical flea treatment on a kitten under 8 weeks of age. Please do not use any topical flea treatment for cats, flea spray, or flea collar on neonatal kittens unless advised to do so by a veterinarian.
Best practice: Apply flea treatment before the next scheduled bath and plan baths at least a week apart from treatment windows. If a bath is medically necessary sooner, choose an oral flea product instead (e.g., Capstar or Comfortis).

Carefully remove fleas from the kittens coat and drop them into the bowl of water to drown the flea. Fill a sink with warm water and two teaspoons of Dawn (or another type of pet-safe dishwashing detergent) and bathe the kitten. Start from the neck and work your way down to the tail.
For these kittens the risk of flea infestation begins once the flea treatment wears off, usually one month after treatment was given. Fleas are small, dark wingless insects with flattened bodies. These blood sucking insects cause considerable irritation and distress.
